Thousands of fundraisers took to the streets alongside celebrities for a 10-mile charity walk to raise £103,000 for poorly children.

More than 3,500 people gathered at Himley Hall, some dressed as schoolgirls, cowboys and cartoon characters for the trek to Wolverhampton Racecourse in Dunstall.

Among those taking part was Claire Felton, whose five-year-old daughter Freya suffers from hereditary pancreatitis and has been supported by Promise Dreams. The 33-year-old, from Willenhall, took along 27 friends for the walk.

“I signed up on the first day,” she said. “Freya has a genetic disorder which she will have for the rest of her life.

“Promise Dreams bought her a wendy house which she loves and took her to see Disney’s Princesses on Ice and they phoneto check on her.

“The charity is very close to our hearts. We called ourselves Freya’s Walkers but we were doing it so the charity can help other poorly children.”

Former Wolves players Steve Bull and Don Goodman joined Wolverhampton-born TV presenter Suzi Perry and singer Beverley Knight for the event, the inaugural Walk of the Black Country, which was organised by Beacon Radio.

Beacon Radio spokesman Kate Fuller said today: “It was such an amazing day. A special mention needs to go to the marshals and sponsors.”
