Punters packed out a pub to welcome darts ace Martin "Wolfie" Adams — and some stepped up to the oche to challenge the champion.

Adams is the world-ranked number 1 British Darts Organisation (BDO) and its reigning world champion.

And yesterday he visited the Globe Inn in Hednesford, Cannock.

The 54-year-old — who has played professionally for 29 years and also won the accolade in 2007 and 2010 — picked up his nickname from his infamous beard. He has captained England since 1993.

Last night "Wolfie" played 14 different players. One of them was Lee Maybury, 39, of Matlock Drive in Cannock.

His wife Fiona, 36, won her husband tickets in a raffle to play the darts legend. Mr Maybury said: "It was fantastic to be able to play him. Obviously I didn't win but he is a darts champion."

Wolfie said: "It's great to be here and take part in something like this. I've been impressed with the punters who I've played against."

"My words to anyone wanting to improve would be to just keep practising."

In darts there are two associations — the BDO and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). .
