Friday 20th May 2011, 11:58AM BST.
The “sleeping” patient allegedly assaulted by a surgeon at Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital was undergoing surgery at the time, it can be revealed today.
Fresh details of the alleged attack come as it emerged that the number of “serious untoward incidents” at the hospital has surged to a year-high. A new report to be considered by the hospital’s board on Monday states an “alleged physical assault to a patient during surgery” is being investigated. Previous sources had only said the patient was “sleeping”.
The cardiac surgeon under investigation has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing and is facing the sack if the assault allegation is upheld.
He is accused of punching the patient to the side of his body in front of at least 11 witnesses. The report confirms the patient did not sustain any injury.
The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust is investigating the incident.
It is understood police have been informed but the family of the cardiac patient do not want to take any further action.
