Severn Valley Railway braced for further disruption
Saturday 30th April 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Services at Kidderminster’s Severn Valley Railway could be disrupted again this winter as further maintenance work is carried out along the historic line.
Officials today revealed they would again be investing heavily in the railway network at the end of the year and the start of 2012.
It has not yet been decided where along the line work will be carried out over the winter months with plans to be finalised in the summer.
It follows a £500,000 scheme between January and March focusing on Bewdley and Arley stations.
Drainage was improved and decaying platforms replaced at Arley and a railway bridge waterproofed at a viaduct in Station Road, near to the Bewdley station.
Signalling equipment and tracks had to be removed at both stations while the work was carried out.
Severn Valley spokesman David Wilcock said: “The railway has only recently got up-and-running after the works which took place last winter so it is early to be thinking about next winter’s scheme yet.
Priorities
“I am sure the engineers will have ideas over what areas will be looked at but these will not be confirmed until the summer.
“Priorities will be drawn up then and we will know more about the kind of work which will be taking place.
“At the moment we are focused on the summer months and bringing in visitors to the station.”
Cash for future work will be financed from profits with the railway working to boost visitor numbers after a drop in the number of people using the trains last year.
