Royals party until morning
Saturday 30th April 2011, 2:00PM BST.
Newlyweds William and Kate today announced they are delaying their honeymoon – but will take a short break this weekend in the United Kingdom.
The couple flew off in a helicopter from Buckingham Palace shortly before midday. They released a statement saying they are to spend time in an undisclosed location before William goes back to work.
The destination of their honeymoon, which will now take place at a later date, is a closely guarded secret, even from the bride.
The new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent their first night as a couple at Buckingham Palace last night, following a party that went on until the early hours.
The couple and 300 close family and friends celebrated the marriage, which was watched by an estimated two billion people across the world.
Earlier, Kate said of the spectacular wedding: “I am glad the weather held off. We had a great day.”
The Queen simply said: “It was amazing.”
Kate last night changed from her stunning bridal gown by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen into another stylish dress by the same designer. William wore a black tuxedo.
Best man Prince Harry organised much of the celebrations, apparently turning one of the palace rooms into a nightclub, and arranging for Royal chefs to prepare a ‘survivor’s breakfast’ of bacon sandwiches.
The younger prince was spotted looking slightly dishevelled and blearly-eyed on a coach that left the Palace at 3am today.
His on-off girlfriend Chelsy Davy left with Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.
William has reportedly not told his bride where they are going on honeymoon.
Speculation over likely destinations include Africa or the Middle East. Jordan, a Caribbean island and Lizard Island, off the coast of Queensland, Australia, are contenders.
But the couple may continue their wedding theme of championing the UK and spend time in Scotland.
