Girl, 5, hit by car in Wolverhampton street

A young girl was knocked off her bike near her home in Wolverhampton with a Royal Wedding party in full flow just feet away, suffering cuts and bruises.

Five-year-old Jessica Gardener was riding in Hillcrest Avenue, Low Hill, at around 5pm yesterday when she was in collision with a silver Vauxhall Vectra, as revellers and relatives looked on.

Her father Dennis ran out of the family home and jumped over the garden wall to get to his daughter, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Dennis and Jessica’s mother Samantha went with the ambulance.

Uncle, Jamie Hall, aged 22, said: “She was on the drive and rolled out into the road and the car hit her and her bike. She’s alright which is the main thing.”

Resident Michelle Hill, 45, was celebrating with friends in the garden of a neighbour’s house. “It all happened so fast,” she said. “It’s a fast corner and drivers can’t see round it. It was an accident waiting to happen.”

The car’s bumper was cracked, while the bike was scuffed.
