Taxpayers face bill of £200k for website

Taxpayers in Staffordshire are being charged £200,000 to fund the county council’s new website.

The new-look site, which went live yesterday, will, according to council chiefs, cost approximately £50,000 every 12 months over the next four years.

Richard Caddy, a council spokesman, says the new website is being paid for in “four instalments”.

He said: “The cost is purely for the software and the development.”

But the spending on the new site has been criticised by the leader of the council’s opposing Labour group, Derek Davis.

He said: “It could be spent on front-line services, or that sort of money could save two or three people’s jobs.” Councillor Davis added that the old site was “more than adequate”. Ian Parry, the council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for finance and transformation, has defended the new website saying it will improve public access to front-line services.

He said: “From day-one people will find it easier to find the information they need. But the new site has the potential to support new functions that were simply not available before.

“This is welcome news that will deliver far better value-for-money for the taxpayer and greatly improve our customer-focus.”

The council says the old website used software that was first introduced almost a decade ago, adding the new site will be able to host features that were not available then, such as wikis, blogs and online polls.

Councillor Parry said: “It was based on software created 10 years ago that is no longer supported and cannot be developed any further. This is a good investment for Staffordshire tax payers.

“We will be introducing new features to the site in the coming months, with each one adding to the value the site is delivering.

“We are also able to share this technology with partners at no extra cost which could add further value.”

Aw, looks like Stafford’s no longer wrapped in cotton wool. Sorry ladies and Gentlemen of this most privileged county, but the gravy train no longer runs to sunshine central.

So if the new £200,000 website generates £300,000 worth of savings by cutting down the amount of written and telephone enquiries that have to be handled, will Derek Davis still regard it as a waste of money?

what a complete waste of money. I am sure that this could have been developed at a much cheaper cost which leads me to think some has had a backhander for getting it past through. However upon saying that the website is user friendly, easy on the eye for people who have visual impairment so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Cllr Davis is probably delighted that someone thought his comments insightful enough to print. I certainly don’t. For most people, a council’s website will be the first port of call for information. Would the Councillor prefer people to take their queries about recycling or leisure centre opening times directly to him? There is worthless spending and there is investment in services. Cllr Davis should think about which he values more. Perhaps then he would be leader of the council, rather than leader of the opposition.

Why are stories like this even published who are any of us to say if this is a waste of money without seeing the benefits and what exactly is being paid for. It’s just more petty point scoring between political parties… please can you find something more useful to do with your time?!

Pasrt of the problem today in both private and public sector is the mantra CUT CUT CUT. This can lead to managers simply looking for reductions rather than investments. It’s already been said so this is not a new comment, if it saves more than it costs is that not a benefit ? If the £200K was not spent and this lead to £300K of queries (as an example) then the expenditure is in fact a cut. This mentality that all new technology spend is bad , combined with the “my budget , your budget” idea, is one of the sins of business in my opinion. If my development project is cut and I save £500K off my budget BUT the knock on is that the project cost £2 Million more to support , then the support budget gets hammered while the development budget looks good. So I (the development manager) anm highly regarded while the support manager looks like a waster.

Changing logos is usually a waste, not all technical spending is.

Sadly typical of the way councils work, close a school or a leisure centre, but pay for a website, and not just a basic one, but with blogs and wikis too!
