HS2 spin doctor to be funded by tax payer
Friday 22nd April 2011, 11:30AM BST.
A spin doctor is being recruited to promote high speed rail to people in the West Midlands – funded by taxpayers.
The annual salary will be £28,579 to £32,790 but the role will be paid pro rata for a nine-month fixed term.
The “media officer” will promote the benefits of the planned £32 billion line, called HS2, and will be held accountable by bosses if negative stories about it appear in the media. The spin doctor will be based at transport authority Centro, which is funded by the councils of the West Midlands.
But the role will be jointly paid for by the bodies that make up the pro-HS2 campaign in the West Midlands, GoHS2.
The group is made up and paid for by Centro, Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, Birmingham Airport, NEC Group and Marketing Birmingham.
Centro is partly funded by Coventry City Council, which is already opposed to high speed rail, and four Black Country councils which want more transport improvements in return for their support.
Two stations will be built in Birmingham and the Government promises knock-on benefits to the rest of the country from 225mph trains running to the capital from the second city in 49 minutes.
Joe Rukin from the Stop HS2 campaign group, said today: “It is an absolute waste of taxpayers’ money and shows that high speed rail means fast trains for fat cats. This shows just how desperate the campaign has become.”
In a joint statement the GoHS2 coalition said: “The business community at the heart of the West Midlands supports the project but is determined to ensure that the evidence and facts are communicated clearly.
“We feel this is important to ensure that the tens of thousands of West Midlanders who will benefit from the new jobs and increased wealth generated by HS2 can make a considered judgement during the public consultation taking place.
“This temporary resource will help do that.”

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles’ new publicity code states – Councils will not be allowed to hire lobbyists “for the purpose of the publication of any material designed to influence public officials, MPs, political parties or the government to take a particular view on any issue”. This looks to me to be a blatant breach of that code.

Please get your facts right. Birmingham Airport has not put any money into this position.

“Go-HS2 is a collaboration between The NEC Group, Birmingham Airport, Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, Business Birmingham, the city’s inward investment agency, Birmingham City Council and transport authority Centro.
The consortium is now looking for an experienced and dynamic media person to help co-ordinate and develop the Go-HS2 campaign, in print, broadcast and social media, during the on-going HS2 public consultation and project development.”

If HS2 was a good thing they wouldn’t need a bloody spin doctor. This is blatantly a waste of money, come on.

d no you come on !
the real spin doctors are the likes of rukin and stop hs2 who keep repeating the same myths and factually incorrect statements in the belief that they will somehow become true.
so we need a body to show support for hs2 and to show the other side of the story and strongly refute any incorrect or wild statements like fat cats, white elephant.concrete bombs, armageddon and 75 metre no vegetation zones ! and yes believe or not readers these are all thing that critics have actually said ! pathetic really.
the cost of the first leg is £17 not £33 billion. the service will save not a few minutes but 30 minutes on a journey which now averages 80 mins ! through trains will operatate to points north over hs2 from day one and existing services will NOT be cut.
