Black Country Living Museum trams back on track
Friday 22nd April 2011, 7:00PM BST.
Historic trams are back up and running at the Black Country Living Museum following months of restoration work after part of the line was stolen by metal thieves.
The popular trams and trolley buses at the Tipton Road site were derailed after raiders took a section of the overhead electrical wiring from the Tipton Road site in January while the power was off.
A vintage coach has been used in place of the trams since the theft.
But today they were once again transporting visitors around the museum grounds in time for the start of the Easter break.
Museum spokeswoman Fiona Carding said: “Extensive work has now been carried out to both the tram and tracks and the copper wiring has been replaced. Systems are in place to give the museum around the clock security.”
Advice on the repairs was sought from Beamish Museum in County Durham, which also has an historic tram line. The museum is not revealing the cost.
