Street parties flag up a right royal occasion

Champagne corks popping, fireworks bursting and rousing renditions of Rule Britannia – Royal Wedding fever will well and truly sweep the Black Country and Staffordshire next week when almost 40 street parties take place.

Hundreds of people will party long into the night on April 29 to celebrate the union of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Council deadlines for road closures have now passed and the Express & Star can today reveal the locations.

Dudley will host the most celebrations, with a grand total of 14, followed by Wolverhampton with 10, Walsall with seven, Sandwell with two and one in Burntwood and one in Hednesford.

One of the parties is due to take place on Clare Road in Coalpool, Walsall, where the bunting is already up and the streamers on display.

The proud residents were among the first in the region to string out the red, white and blue decorations around lamp posts and houses.

Organiser Jane Hadley-Brown said: “We are looking forward to it already.

“Three of us in the road remember previous street parties for Royal occasions so it will be a trip down memory lane for us.”

Each household in the 14-home cul-de-sac donated £5 towards the cost of the bunting and many are preparing their own food dishes.

Mrs Hadley-Brown added: “We will have a marquee in the street in case it rains and we’ll be playing games with the kids and playing music too.

“We have a cake with William and Kate on it and we hope for a real party atmosphere.”

Meanwhile, a little further east, over in Burntwood, people will also be partying away in Telford Close from 11am on the big day.

Organiser Adrian Bates said: “Socialising is a very important part of any community and the Royal Wedding is an event people will remember for a long time.

“Hopefully for the people on Telford Close they will always relate the Royal Wedding to having a great time at the street party. All we need is the weather.” Local authorities from every corner of the region waived any road closure fees with no additional licences required in the majority of cases so people could hold celebrations.

But council chiefs were today reminding people that street parties remained private affairs and were not mass events for the general public. However, they said there would be events for anyone who wished to drop in elsewhere.

Colin Parr, Wolverhampton City Council’s licensing manager, said: “We are delighted that the people of Wolverhampton have been so enthusiastic in their support of the Royal Wedding.

“We would encourage members of the public to join in the celebrations at the special event which the city council is laying on at Church Street, Bilston.”
