The development company behind Wolverhampton’s failed Summer Row shopping centre reimbursed the city council £3.7 million, it was revealed today.

The £300m shopping centre plans were finally scrapped at the end of January.

Wolverhampton City Council bosses had spent three years trying to revive the project after developer Multi lost backing from Irish investors for half of the costs during the recession in 2008.

But the scheme finally collapsed after the council decided it could not risk taxpayers’ money by taking out a £20m loan to complete compulsory purchase orders.

Figures released to the Express & Star show that Multi had to spend £3.7m over the life of the project to reimburse costs incurred by the city council.
