A new Asda supermarket creating 400 jobs is planned for Kidderminster, bringing a derelict carpet factory back into use, it was revealed today.

The supermarket is part of a redevelopment of industrial land on the Churchfields site off St Mary's Ringway, featuring a store, petrol station, offices and homes.

A new link road from Churchfields to the ringway roundabout is also proposed, to prevent the area becoming clogged by traffic.

The 1902 factory, part of the former Tomkinson's carpet business, currently stands empty but would be used as part of the store.

The 9,200 sq m store would be accompanied by about 5,000 sq m of offices, 25 new homes and possibly a community centre. Asda is working with developer Kidderminster Property

Investments on the plans. A public consultation and exhibition will be held before an application is submitted.

The scheme aims to connect the Horsefair shopping area with the town centre.

Avnish Raichura, property communications manager for Asda, said: "We are very excited about these plans. We didn't want to pull down the 1902 building as it is important to local people so we have managed to incorporate it into the scheme."

The exhibition will take place on March 11 and 12 at Unit 7, Churchfields Business Park, Clensmore Street.
