Driver admits causing death of baby in Smethwick crash

The man behind the wheel of a speeding high powered sports car involved in a hit-and-run crash which killed a two-month-old baby has admitted causing death by careless driving.

Kabir Khan was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution which crashed into a Toyota Corolla in Grove Lane, Smethwick last November.

Two-month-old Mohammed Isa, who was one of the passengers in the Toyota, was killed in the crash.

Kabir, aged 31, of Waterloo Road, Oldbury pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving when he appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

He also admitted driving while disqualified, failing to stop, failing to report an accident and driving with no insurance, at the hearing yesterday.

The court heard he was driving at 58mph in a 40mph zone before the crash.

Tiny Mohammed was thrown from the Toyota. He was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital after the crash on the dual carriageway on the icy evening but was later pronounced dead.

The rest of the people in the Corolla, including members of Mohammed’s family, were also injured.

His parents, aged 27 and 26, were taken to City Hospital and his 69-year-old grandfather and a 24-year-old family friend were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

The Mitsubishi had no registered owner and the car sped off after the crash, at 6pm on November 27 last year. It had been travelling along the dual carriageway towards Oldbury at the time of the crash.

Witnesses said at the time they heard the Mitsubishi “roaring” down the dual carriageway minutes before the crash. A passer-by who went to help the victims spoke of “horrific” scenes, describing how he saw the baby lying on the pavement.

Following his death Mohammed’s uncle said the family was “heartbroken”.

Khan was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court on March 25.

West Midlands Police today refused to release a picture of Khan pending sentence.
