Plasterers save man’s life
Friday 18th February 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
Two quick-thinking plasterers helped save a man’s life after he suffered an epileptic fit and collapsed on his driveway, suffering serious injuries.
Dane Edwards and Gary Banks dropped their trowels and buckets and raced to the aid of Michael Booth, who suffered the attack outside his Wolverhampton home.
The duo used dust sheets to prop up Michael’s head and covered him with their coats to keep him warm as they waited for an ambulance. Dane, of Tettenhall, put him in the recovery position.
He checked Michael’s airways while Gary, of Lewis Avenue in Eastfield, dialled 999.
Michael, 26, was treated at New Cross Hospital for a shattered jaw and two broken cheekbones. He lost teeth in the fall.
He suffered a second fit in hospital.
And doctors warned he could have died without the help of the plasterers, who were working on a flat nearby.
Michael said today: “I’m extremely grateful to Dane and Gary as without their help, I wouldn’t have got the medical help I needed.”
His mother Catherine, who lives in the same street as her son, Warstones Road, said: “I am so grateful to Dane and Gary.
“These are the worst injuries Michael has ever sustained since being diagnosed with complex epilepsy as a child.”
Dane, 41, said: “I knew it was a serious fit so I tried to make sure that Michael wasn’t choking on his tongue.
“I knew how to put Michael in the recovery position after completing a first aid course — it just all came back to me.”
