Region to get seventh MEP at cost of £2.1m

The West Midlands will get a seventh Member of European Parliament at a cost of £2.1 million a year, it emerged today.

New legislation to transfer more powers to Brussels will result in the creation of another MEPfor the West Midlands.

The move has been fiercely opposed by Eurosceptics who say it is unnecessary and undemocratic. The extra MEP will be appointed rather than elected and will be chosen based on the candidate who most narrowly missed out in the last European elections in 2009.

The post is likely to go to the Tories and the new member, Anthea McIntyre, would take her seat later this year.

West Midland MEP Nikki Sinclaire, who used to represent the United Kingdom Independence Party but now sits as an independent, said today: “The last thing we need at a time when front line services are being cut is another politician.

“Worse still, this person will be completely unelected.

“The election posters for the 2009 poll said the West Midlands was electing six MEPs, not seven. This should either be delayed until the next European elections or, if we really have to have another politician, it should be put to a vote at a convenient time, like the local elections in May when it won’t cost too much.

“This extra politician will cost £2.1m a year because of salary, travel, expenses and the need for offices in the West Midlands, Brussels and Strasbourg.”

Under the new EU Bill, any changes to treaties that move power to Brussels have to go to a national referendum. But there is a clause that allows a minister to state that any transfer of power to Brussels is not significant enough to merit a referendum.

Tory MEP Malcolm Harbour said: “This is being done entirely within the rules.” He added that a by-election could not be held because the European Parliament is elected by proportional representation where every party has a list of candidates.

The legislation also states EU law only takes effect in the UK because the British parliament allows it to.

We’ll gladly surrender all six of our MEPs in return for Britain regaining sovereignty over its own laws once again.

“New Legislation to Transfer More Power To Brussels”(ie The Lisbon Treaty). Says it all really. No doubt that the £118 billion pound per year cost of EUSSR membership as reported in 2009 has now increased. It’s about time the British people finally woke up from their mainstream media induced slumber and actually found out what is happening to their country.

Would these people prefer another election and the collosal cost of that in addition to the cost of another member?

It is untrue to say this person is to be “appointed”. This person stood for election and presumable came within a whisker of being selected.

One extra representative improves our relative representation in that remote and generally unaccountable assembly.

Malcolm Harbour is quite wrong. The 1999 Act that provides for election to the European Patrliament allows for by elections. He just wants another conservative at the cost of £2.1 million. NO thanks I would rather have more public services.

I don’t want one Euro MP, let alone eight.
I used to vote UKIP because they promised that, if elected, they would boycott the European Parliament. But guess what, as soon as they got in, they started attending – and claming their attendance allowance.
The ballot papers should have an extra box, beneath all the candidates, where voters can say they don’t wish to be represented in the European Parliament, and do not want to elect a Euro MP

The election was clearly for six MEPs and not seven and this point was confirmed by the Returning Officer. There is no legal justification to add one on after the event.
The political mood has changed since June 2009. Let the people decide!
Any attempt for the Government to place an MEP into this position instead of allowing the people to decide should be challenged in the courts.
Nikki’s point that we should avoid the expense until 2014 and save the money is correct.
Another Tory MEP voting for EU legislation and giving it all away is the last thing that the UK needs.

I am appalled at the amount of OUR money the EU is draining from our Country on a daily basis. Please please wake up people and vote to get us out of this evil marriage of everyone else’s convenience. No wonder our people are in a depressed state, it is absolutely irresponsible of our government to continue filtering OUR money for use to modernise less able countries when we have our own financial crisis.Even more disgusting to waste more at this crucial time. Everyone needs to understand that we are unable to pay our own way and have a job to survive so can’t possibly take more avoidable outside commitments.

Ms Sinclaire, surely we should be decreasing our representation in Europe and having people who represent the party that we voted for in office.

Your are no longer UKIP, we should have a new election to see who takes your post along with this new post.

And we can save a few bob by closing the UK Parliament and Local Government and be ruled from Brussels – at least they will be organized!
