A double decker bus burst into flames on a busy commuter route through West Bromwich today.

The blaze, the cause of which is not yet known, started on the National Express West Midlands bus as it travelled along All Saints Way towards Great Barr.

A total of 60 per cent of the top deck of the 451 West Bromwich to Sutton Coldfield bus was burned out following the fire at 9.15am.

Crews from Tipton and Oldbury were called and police closed All Saints Way while flames were extinguished.

Eyewitness Derrick Tibbetts, a 50-year-old Sandwell Council worker, said: "You could feel the heat of the flames from the other side of the road."

Watch Commander Keith Hampton, from Tipton Fire station said: "The cause of the fire is under investigation. There was only one man on the lower deck of the bus at the time." The driver was taken to the depot and the passenger walked away from the scene.
