First image of West Bromwich’s new cinema

A new image released today shows the location of West Bromwich’s new six-screen cinema – directly opposite The Public arts centre.

The new Reel Cinema will be above restaurants, which will line the street opposite the £72 million centre.

The company today revealed 35 new jobs will be created at the cinema, including full and part-time roles, when it opens in October next year.

Kailash Suri, chairman of Reel Cinemas, said: “The town is long overdue a cinema but Reel Cinemas will offer the latest movies on six screens, creating up to 35 full and part-time jobs in the process.

“It’s a very exciting time for people in West Bromwich and we are confident that the new cinema will be a great addition to the town centre.”

The computer-generated image is the latest to be revealed by developers Tesco, showing how the town will look following the first phase of its £200m investment.

Restaurants and pavement cafes will replace the tired and crumbling shops currently lining New Street, with the cinema boasting a dramatic glass front entrance, taking up floor space above the restaurants.

The image shows a pedestrianised precinct leading up from The Public towards the Tesco development itself, with glass-fronted fashion boutiques filling the surrounding area.

Tesco bosses said the company is just weeks away from announcing which high street names will be moving into the centre as part of the retail development. Tony Fletcher, corporate affairs manager at Tesco, said: “Lettings are progressing well with a range of high profile high street  names currently working with our solicitors to sign up to the scheme. We are delighted to announce that Reel Cinemas will be coming to West Bromwich under the town centre redevelopment scheme.”

As well the £200m Tesco regeneration, a new £75m office scheme on All Saints Way is also being built. Work is already under way at the site, which will include a home for BT Liberata and West Bromwich Building Society. It is also planned to reduce speed limits in West Bromwich to 20mph, introduce one-way systems and ban driving completely in certain areas to make the town more pedestrian-friendly.

Sandwell neighbourhoods chief, Councillor Derek Rowley, is due to approve highways measures tomorrow.
