Metal thefts rise by 20pc as price soars

Metal thefts have exploded by 20 per cent in the West Midlands, with 800 more cases of lead and copper being stolen as prices rocket, it can be revealed today.

There were 4,547 thefts, the equivalent of a dozen every day, as criminals plundered railway lines, electricity substations and roofs. The figures show an increase of more than 750 compared to 2008, when the West Midlands was badly hit because of a surge in global prices.

Thefts fell in 2009, but rose against last year as increased demand sent scrap prices soaring.

There were 2,793 lead thefts last year, including churches, schools and houses, compared to 2,463 the previous year.

For copper, which includes cabling stolen from sub stations, the figure rose from 1,326 to 1,754.

The figures comes on the day a 17 per cent hike in the cost of construction steel, equivalent to a rise of £95-a-ton, was announced.

It will fuel fears of further increases in metal theft.

Det Insp Wayne Jones, who oversees the West Midlands Police response to metal theft, said today: “We are getting together with people in industry, such as the utility companies, to tackle this problem.

“We’re also looking at doing more work at a regional level with Staffordshire and West Mercia Police.”

Earlier this month, it emerged that former Gurkhas were helping in the battle against metal thieves in the West Midlands.

Retired members of the elite regiment are being employed by power firm E.On to carry out surveillance at sub-station sites in the region, which have repeatedly fallen victim to late-night attacks.

Thieves are breaking in to sub-stations around the Midlands to steal copper, which typically nets them up to £150 a time when sold at unscrupulous scrap dealers.

Yesterday, it emerged that raiders at the Severn Valley Railway site had hot-wired a crane before loading copper sheets worth about £70,000 in a “pre-planned and highly professional” attack.

Thieves disabled an alarm and clambered through an air vent at a section of the historic attraction in Bridgnorth.

Let’s see some long prison sentences when these people are caught, nothing is scared or safe to these people.

A lot of these wasters are living on Social Security and stealing metal to top up their benefits,it’s now getting past the joke I would like to see a minimum 5 year prison sentence for this crime. But there’s no chance of that with Ken Clarke and his wishy-washy ideas.

Perhaps he will take a diffrent view if they nick the lead off the roof of his house!

These thieves sell their stolen metal to “unscrupulous dealers”, don’t they mean “fences” for stolen goods.
At one time “fences used to get harsher sentences than the thieves because without the fences the thieves would have nowhere to offload there criminal proceeds.
Stand up people and DEMAND the courts start acting in the interest of law abiding people and against the criminals. It is your right to demand justice.

We can’t afford to send thieves to prison. Haven’t you heard?

The small change in the law to make it illegal to pay out cash for scrap and only to be able to pay the mioney into a bank account would mean that the address and name of those bringing in scrap would be accurate and traceable. It would stop the illegal trade stone dead. Tom Watson MP has done soem work on this and mybe just a clause added to a current justice bill would be enough to close this loophole.. Lobby your own MP to support this as a cross party move
The cost to us all in disrutped travel, repair of vandalised churches, telephones, is enormous and must be stopped. Lives will be lost by this if not have been already

If they’re caught stealing, they should loose their benefits for life. (Along with immediate and permenent deportation to their country of birth, in cases of non UK thieves.)
Also their property should be impounded and sold to compensate victims.

I live on the Northway and today we had at least 5 scrap men go past, 3 playing the bugle. I know that they may not be the ones nicking the big stuff but it has to stop. Its getting out of hand and the police will have no option but to ban it completely.
The legit tatters should stand up and hound out the ones that aint..they are ruining it for you.

I am a registered scrap dealer(env.agency and W’ton council licenced)and see scrap vans with upto three occupants.
I know from experience that this business cannot support three peoples wages legally.
Scrap is £180 per tonne(light iron)which is the most common scrap collected.
Copper and lead etc is not usually left out for scrap.
Transit pick up full load about one tonne(2/3 days to collect minus fuel expenses).
