Firefighters smashed their way into a flat to rescue a sleeping pensioner after his door was set on fire in a suspected arson attack.

The 75-year-old was asleep in Vicarage Prospect, Dudley, when fire crews turned up around 10pm yesterday.

Mark Smith from Dudley Fire Station said they had knocked on his door but there was no response. “It turned out he wasn’t injured – he just hadn’t heard us,” he said.

A 39-year-old man was today helping police with their inquiries.
