New Cross Hospital fears 32 have flu

Thirty-two patients at New Cross Hospital were today suspected of having flu as the bug tightened its grip on the Black Country.

Ten people are on the critical care unit and have been kept separate from other patients in side rooms.

NHS West Midlands said there were 88 patients with flu or suspected flu in units of this kind in hospitals in the region, 32 more than a week ago.

Nationally, the number of people in intensive care with confirmed or suspected flu in England has risen to 738. There were 12 flu deaths this week.

Since the first case of swine flu was confirmed at New Cross before Christmas, 140 people have displayed signs of the disease.

A patient in her 70s died at New Cross on Monday while suffering from swine flu.
