Bus and rail fares to rise
Friday 31st December 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Bus and train passengers will be hit with a double whammy of inflation-busting fares this weekend as companies impose big rises.
Sunday’s increases come just two days before the cost of petrol is also expected to soar, with the VAT rise hitting every form of transport.
A public backlash against the rises, which in some cases are three times the rate of inflation, began today with the launch of a national petition.
Some rail tickets in the West Midlands will rise by as much as 9.5 per cent. The cost of bus tickets is going up 10p for a single fare on National Express West Midlands, which runs most services in the region. This represents a 5.8 per cent hike at a time when inflation is 3.3 per cent. Daysaver ticket prices will go up by around 3 per cent.
Rail firms are being allowed to increase their fares by an overall average of 5.8 per cent under a Government-imposed cap. That means that while some routes face minimal rises, others will increase substantially.
The Campaign For Better Transport, which is launching the Fair Fares Now petition, estimates some people will end up paying up to £5,000 more for season tickets.
CrossCountry, Virgin Trains and Wrexham and Shropshire trains are all putting up the prices of tickets bought on the day of travel, while London Midland is putting up its advance and other discounted tickets.
CrossCountry spokesman Stuart Henry said: “The average increase in CrossCountry ticket prices is 84p per journey.”
He said first class and advance fares would be frozen.
National Express West Midlands says it will use revenue from its price rises to help fund 120 new buses for the region.
Councillor Judith Rowley, who represents Wolverhampton on transport authority Centro, criticised the lack of written consultation about bus fare rises in the region.
“There has been no leaflet issued to passengers to explain that the bus fare rises are coming, which means that people who are not aware of it may find themselves short of the extra change on Tuesday,” she said.

And they keep banging the “Used public transport” drum…
The people of the West Midlands are paying for National Express’s failure of their East Coast Trains…
I say where you can boycott them, Arriva and Diamond all the way for me from now on

With the new price hikes, let’s hope that they become more efficient and can invest so that we always have the right type of snow, leaves and ice!

Metro fares are also going up.

I’ll stick to the car. Its cheaper and more convenient, even though its a 2.0l turbo.

I hope someone can prove me wrong, but has a petition ever over turned a decision in this country?
Personally I don’t think so, as the people in charge do not car about the public. Its all profit and their figures they care about.

Biggest petition is to simply vote them out, and ensure we replace them with a solution that is accountable, that puts English interests first. To put this whole transport issue into perspective..they saw this coming, and yet they STILL continue to send £billions overseas. They don’t care about solutions because a solution means they’re out of a job and the gravy train (which is always on time), stops running. Until they’re voted out, our loss is always going to be their gain.

I hope the penalties and refunds that train operators are forced to pay when they fail to operate their services due to sun / rain / wind / sunshine / darkness / snow / lack of staff / lack of trains* (delete as appropriate) are going to rise by the same percentage!

I am so glad i passed my driving test recently, because i for one would not be happy to pay any increase in bus fares, when the service i had was ettingvery poor, having to listen to inconciderate individuals who seem to think everyone wants to listen to their loud crap musci or listen to bad language etc, half the time when i got on a bus in the evenings it was like going home in a skip!!! what with all the rubbish, and empty pop/beer cans rolling around the bus, and don’t get me started on the individuals who seem to think that because they’re sitting upstairs it’s ok to smoke, well guess what……it’s not.

Its about par for the course. Trouble is, it has a horrible knock on effect and the price of everything delivered by road transport rockets. Too much profiteering, too many rich fat cats sitting in too many ivory towers.
