Crash chaos as temperatures drop

Two drivers were cut free from their cars and taken to hospital following a head-on collision after sub-zero temperatures turned West Midlands roads to ice.

And a section of a busy route in Wolverhampton was closed for more than three hours following a rush-hour crash at the junction of Holyhead Road and Wrottesley Park Road.

The incident, between Tettenhall and Perton at 4.53pm yesterday, was one of a series of smashes on the region’s roads.

Part of the M54 was closed and a female driver taken to hospital after a three-car collision near Featherstone.

The westbound stretch between Junctions 1 and 2 was shut after the crash between a Fiat Punto, Volkswagen Touareg and  Mazda MX5, at 6.49pm yesterday.

The Punto driver was taken to New Cross with a  leg injury.

Meanwhile, nurse Andrew Dixon skidded on black ice on his way to work today.

The 28-year-old was driving through Great Western Way in Great Bridge on his way to Sandwell Hospital when he spun out of control and crashed his Ford Ka into railings.

He said: “I just lost control, you can’t see the ice. It is just terrible.”

Fire crews from Tettenhall and Wolverhampton were called to a crash between a Peugeot and Fiat Punto in Holyhead Road, Wolverhampton, yesterday afternoon to cut drivers from their cars.
