Councillor’s son in drugs plot
Thursday 23rd December 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
The son of a Black Country councillor has admitted plotting to grow cannabis at 25 different properties in the West Midlands.
Ali Munir, whose father is Walsall Conservative councillor Mohammed Munir, is currently serving a prison sentence.
He was jailed for three months just weeks ago for falsifying votes during the 2008 local council elections.
Now the 30-year-old has pleaded guilty to being involved in the drugs conspiracy and appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday.
The arrest of Munir, of Thorpe Road in Caldmore, Walsall, followed a series of raids across the borough linked to a police investigation into a cannabis ring on March 2 this year.
Co-accused Shazad Ali, also 30, of Brook House Road, Walsall, admitted the same offence.
Mr Julian Elcock, prosecuting, said: “A large number of properties were involved in this matter.
“The defendants’ direct benefit began from May 22, 2007, and involved 25 properties.
“This is accepted by the prosecution in relation to sentencing although it might not be when it comes to the question of Proceeds of Crime procedures.”
No further details about the case were given to the court. These will be outlined in full when the pair are sentenced on February 3.
Judge Martin Walsh ordered reports and remanded the two men in custody.
Munir was jailed at Birmingham Crown Court on December 1 for electoral fraud after admitting two charges of making false applications for proxy votes..
His father Councillor Mohammed Munir, 58, represents Palfrey. The councillor was also arrested on suspicion of electoral fraud but was cleared in September.
