This is the high-performance car involved in a horror smash that killed a two-month-old baby boy.

Detectives are now looking for the occupants of the silver Mitsubishi Evolution which ploughed into a Toyota Corolla in Grove Lane, Smethwick, at the junction with Painters Corner.

The child, who is from Smethwick, was thrown from the car in the crash and later died at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

His parents, aged 27 and 26, 69-year-old grandfather and a 24-year-old family friend remained in hospital with serious injuries today.

Officers say they have already had a good response from the public with their inquiries into the identity of the driver of the Mitsubishi, but were still appealing for help.

It is believed at least three people travelling in the Mitsubishi, all left the scene following the collision prior to police attending on Saturday evening. The Mitsubishi, which has a registration of R54 RMW, currently has no registered owner.

Inspector Mark Watkins, from the force traffic department, said police believed the Corolla was travelling along Grove Lane towards Birmingham and the Mitsubishi was travelling towards Oldbury when the crash happened. Officers are investigating the possibility that the Corolla was turning right at a junction in the road.

Inspector Watkins said both cars were now being examined by forensics experts. He said: “I would like to make a personal appeal specifically to those occupants to contact police,” he said.

One witness who did not want to be named said he raced to the aid of the passengers inside the crumpled Toyota.

The 40-year-old said: “I saw a side window of the vehicle had been smashed in the crash and I went and looked around the outside of the car and saw the baby lying on the pavement, it was horrific.” Anyone with information should contact 0345 113 5000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
