Requests flood in for additional bin bags

Hundreds of extra bin bags have been requested by families in Dudley since council chiefs imposed a limit on how many could be put out for collection it has emerged.

A controversial three-bag limit on collections from each household was imposed alongside the issuing of bin bags in bulk in September this year.

However, in certain cases householders can request they be allowed to put out an extra bag and council chiefs have revealed the numbers asking for a fourth bag has jumped since the changes were introduced.

Also able to put out an extra bag are those who need to dispose of low grade medical waste such as cath-eters. Council bosses have revealed that from Novemb-er 2009 and August this year there were 319 requests from householders asking for extra bags.

However since September this year, when the changes were introduced, there have been 842 requests.

Residents who are successful in applying for an extra bin bag are given a red sticker to show that they are allowed to put four bags out.

Dudley Council spokeswoman Kate Arnold said: “We have seen an increase in the number of households requesting the red sticker scheme, which is used by a minority of our residents who generate additional waste, since the changes to our bin collection service.”

As part of the changes bags are being delivered in bulk rather than once a week with rolls of 26 bags issued to last six months.

The changes to the bin collections in the borough will save the council around £250,000 a year. The cash will be clawed back by reducing the number of binmen in each crew from five to four and ending the use of agency staff. No redundancies were made but staff who left were not replaced.

Bosses say early evidence indicates there has been an increase in recycling rates. Council chiefs have also announced details of bin and recycling collections over the festive season.

This year, bin bag and recycling collection days will not be affected. Collections will be made on all weekday bank holidays meaning that normal weekly collection days remain the same.

A leaflet detailing Christmas and New Year collection arrangements, along with next year’s recycling calendar, is being delivered to each property.

Perhaps the people of Dudley should buy their own bin bags 80p for 30 at tescos. Come you tight lot!!You are probably the one and only council left who gives you free bin bags.Come over to Sandwell..No limits imposed yet!!And they say dudley is better ..Ha what a laugh.

Read again, the requests are to allow people to put an extra bin bag out for collection, not for free bags!! And yes we may get free bags, but we don’t get wheelie bins or cardboard collections, and no thanks, I’d rather not come to Sandwell. We probably get free bags because our council didn’t spend thousands of pounds renaming itself. Oh no wait, you are still called Sandwell? Surely that was free???

LOL And perhaps you don’t get wheelie bins and cardboard collections either because dudley spent an enormous amount of money on a botched bypass job as well!! You might have even had house renovation through dudley as well if you all bought your own bin bags to help out a little eh??

Your Council’s just as bad as ours..they’re all in it together and it is we, the taxpayer, who has to foot the bill for the rubbish they create.

    • Dudley rocks!

And vastly more Sandwell parents still prefer to send their children to Dudley schools than the other way around.

So Dudley must be doing something right.

Are they doing something right? Thats why parents of local schools in Dudley are having to send their kids on bus rides because their local school can’t accomodate them simply because of Sandwell kids.Don’t sound right to me does it you?? And I know a number of parents who have appealed and lost against the stupid decisions the schools have to make. You would think priority is given in Dudley to local family’s but it’s not always the case.

Dudley Council would give priority to Dudley children if only the law permitted it.

However, the ‘Greenwich Judgement’ in 1989 set the case law which determines that schools have to allocate places on the basis of the proximity of the childrens’ home addresses to the school.

Which is a bit of bad luck if your best schools just happen to be located close to the boundaries with Sandwell, Birmingham and Wolverhampton!

Can’t believe the comments, sounds just like kids who hate going to school, hate their school but then when one school comes up against another for a tussle, they’ll defend it! LMAO!

3 bags can be an issue for some, so can understand why requests go in – kind of unmanageable and trackable though – I’d suggest just putting your extra bag(s) with a neighbour who only has 1 or 2! (But just don’t tell the council!!)
