Early reports said that one of the injured was critically ill, while a second was said to be "walking wounded" after the drama at around 3:40pm.

All flights have been suspended and the runway closed following the incident.

The A45 near to the airport has been closed and traffic is extremely busy in the area.

Commuters are advised to to avoid the area if possible.

John Morris, Birmingham Airport's Head of Government and Industry Affairs, said: "At the moment, all I can confirm is that there was an incident with a private Cessna aircraft.

"The emergency services are in attendance.

"Anyone travelling tonight is asked to contact their airline in the first instance, rather than come to the airport."
