Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Fury over Walsall councillors’ pay rise plan
Monday 1st November 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Senior councillors at a Black Country authority which must save £65 million will give themselves pay rises under controversial new plans revealed today.
Cabinet members at Walsall Council will see their extra-responsibility payments rise by £2,300, £1,500 or £1,000 every year for the next four years if the plans are approved — all on top of their basic allowance of more than £10,378.
But the idea was today slammed as “utterly disgraceful” as the council battles to save £65 million over the next three years and faces job losses and service cuts across the board.
If approved by councillors, leader Mike Bird will see his Special Responsibility Allowance rise from £20,756 to £22,256 from April 1 next year.
Deputy leader Adrian Andrew’s extra responsibility payment will increase from £8,302 to £10,602 and other cabinet members from £8,302 to £9,302.
The plans have been recommended for approval by the Independent Renumeration Panel in order to bring Walsall Council more in line with other West Midlands authorities.
But Councillor Pete Smith, who represents Blakenall, said today: “It will be utterly disgraceful if these proposals are accepted.
“It means that those who are wielding the axe against council pay, jobs, services and service charges, namely the council’s cabinet, will be doing very nicely thank you over the next few years. They get big pay rises whilst their employees get nothing and in many cases lose their jobs.
“I hope there is a huge public outcry over these proposals and sincerely hope that all councillors see the hypocrisy of paying these big rises at a time when everyone else is facing such uncertainty.”
The local authority’s 60 councillors would not see their basic allowances increased. Only councillors with added responsibilities would benefit financially.
Council leader Mike Bird today said the senior councillors worked around the clock and deserved to have their allowances brought more in line with their counterparts across the region.
“We are at the helm of a £750 million business that is facing massive obstacles,” Councillor Bird said.
“We are spending more hours here than ever before, working around the clock away from our families.
“This is a 365-days-a-year, 24/7 job and I think we are worth it.
“These proposals were made by an independent panel and will not put us above or below any other council in the West Midlands, simply in line.
“If other councillors have such a problem with this, then they could always refuse their own allowances.”
The recommendations will go before Full Council on November 8.

A pay rise! for doing what?????

Spending more on yourself while working out how to spend less? Not sure they are up to the job!

Bad PR chaps.
There’s no way to come out of it looking good.
I can see your argument that you are working hard, but you are telling people who are working hard to simply keep a job. And you are telling people who are having a pay freeze. And you are telling people who, if they could have, would have frozen their pay to keep their jobs.
Working hard maybe, but not working well.
If they were doing anything useful in all those hours then the borough wouldn’t be in the mess it is in
Report abuse
How can they justify these sort of increases council taxpayers will not have a pay rise

Typical of this authority! Always finding ways to spend money, yet no improvement in services. Pity the people who haven’t had bins emptied since the new system put in place. Road system still causing hold-ups and confusion. Councillors should be taking CUTS if service not provided!

Well i agree, most of all there aim is to cut back as much as possible so they can allow for there own wage rise, its all worked out very carfully, number one comes first, the community last, well thats if they think we exist!
I think this is a farce, what ever happened to being able to represent the community because you wanted to help? It is all now just a job, these people do not need to work, simply turn up at a couple of meetings to claim the EXTRA allowance and Roberts your Mothers brother – it is a disgrace for these people to say that they represent us, see what happens when you try to get something done from the council, and while I am at it – whatever happened to those nice big old wrought iron gates taken down from the Field Road entrance of Bloxwich cemetary I wonder when they were replaced with simple steel bar type gates??? I am enraged at the whole thing.

It was not so long ago that these councilors wrote off millions of pounds in an accounting error costing us the tax payers money.
either they find the missing millions and have there rise or better still sack the lot of them and find someone who can do the job right in the first place.

Make the most of it! You will not get in at the next council election!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So it is a 365 days and 24/7 job. I doubt it very much. Local Councillors are only seen at election time, and then only a small % of them. So the increase will only bring them in line with other councils, what an excuse. Council workers have no increase this or next year. If the workers were awarded an increase by an independant body would Cnc Bird approve the payment, again I doubt it very much. Lets get back to the old days when Councillors did the job to help the community and not to bleed it dry

Councillors might or might not only be ‘seen’ at election time (although it really depends how hard you want to go looking). However, that doesn’t mean they are sitting on their derrieres doing nothing.
Besides, Derek, as you feel so strongly I take it you will be standing in next May’s local elections, and if voted in will forsake any allowances and offer up every other evening to doing something for your local community (and probably being out of pocket in the process)? If not, do not pass judgement on those who do.
As it happens, I too think the increases are wrong. However, there is a world of difference between other councillors criticising them – people who have proved by their self-sacrifice on behalf of their communities that they can ‘walk the walk’, as it were – and the usual armchair ‘talk the talk’ motormouths on this site gobbing off about things about which they know nothing.

It is time for the people of Walsall to stand up and tell their elected officials that enough is enough. When one looks at any performance table for local authorities Walsall is always bumping along somewhere near the bottom. Due to the economic downturn I am sure all council workers will be told to tighten their belts and ratepayers will be told that services will suffer because there is no money available. And yet we have one of the countries highest paid Chief Executives on over £200,00 per annum and our senior councillors feel they should be paid more. Everyone needs to get along to the council meeting on November 8th and show councillors what the people of Walsall think of their proposed increase.

So I take it that Single Status will put workers on a par with the terms, conditions and wages that are paid at other local authorities will they? Yeah right.
Dont forget the senior management pay rises last year as well. 13% was it?
Meanwhile terms and conditions are worsened, pay will be slashed, holidays grabbed back and redundancies aplenty.
I’m not saying there is not wasters in local government but there are a lot of good people that are amongst them. These increases will lead to another person delivering a service to the community losing their job.
Mind you I dare say that the cabinet need to try and ching it before May.
I might ring up and say this personally. Of course it will be at 4.30 on Christmas morning.

This is disgraceful, expecting everyone else to cut back while they feather their own nests.
It is interesting to note that I tried to contact my local Tory councillors last night and their phones were on answer phone or switched off! I was only able to speak to a Labour Councillor out of my area. I take it that my lot were all working so hard!
Why can’t they set an example and not try to keep up with councillors in other areas.

Watch out when it comes to re-election !!. Being a councillor is a 365 day 24/7 job has to be the best quote !. If it was, do we think they would be doing it ?
The councillors should hang their heads in shame. Despite the recession it appears they’ve got their snouts in the trough while low paid employees and taxpayers have to suffer!
