A34 red route scheme extended

Friday 29th October 2010, 11:29AM BST.

Traffic restrictions were coming into place on a major route in the Black Country today as a £1 million red route scheme was extended.

No-stopping rules were enforced on the A34 along All Saints Way in West Bromwich and Newton Road in Great Barr on October 4. Now the scheme will be rolled out along the major commuter route from the Scott Arms junction all the way to the motorway.

The red route has been introduced to allow traffic to flow more freely on what is one of the busiest routes in and out of Great Barr and West Bromwich, connecting the town with the motorway network.

Cabinet member for safer neighbourhoods Councillor Derek Rowley said: “The proposed improvements will offer reduced travel times for all road transport using the route, improved pedestrian facilities and new pedestrian routes.

“It will also improve safety for road users, provide new cycle facilities and links and new parking bays at key locations to accommodate parking and loading.”

A street will be closed on Sunday as part of ongoing works for a second red route scheme in Sandwell, worth £8.5m.

Piddock Road will be closed from 8am to 6pm for minor utilities work as part of a 10 months programme of roadworks. Access to properties will only be available via Crocketts Lane.

Work began on the multi-million pound jam-busting scheme in Smethwick in May this year.

This is really a complete waste of money, they have put one of these red routes between Scott Arms & the Broadway in Walsall & congestion just as bad. Parking, wasn’t a problem before & all now it encourages people, on certain occasions, is to park on the footpath endangering pedestrians who are forced to walk in the road. It’s good job the traffic going less that 5mph

A few light years away there is a city crawling with them – the capital,London.
1/ There are so many signs on them that is a miracle with the traffic that you can take them all in.People seem to obey about one rule in two especially if they have foreign or diplomatic plates.
2/ The place is also crawling with thousands of bicycles and they are relatively badly equipped for cyclists in face of the sheer volume of traffic.
I was on Euston Road on the 205 bus this Tuesday evening rush hour. The Red Route was hell on earth Lagos or Bangkok style.
The other week I was on the A2 in the evening on a coach (Spanish plates and Portuguese driver). In and around Lewisham the bus went happily through four or five red lights. As for the cyclists-most without I repeat without helmets-they were left scurrying regularly for safety !
They might get you to a hospital or fire quicker but as for the rest…..
