Stolen BMW crashes after pursuit

Friday 22nd October 2010, 11:30AM BST.

Tim Goldsmith sent in this picture of the scene at the junction of Lower Street and Tettenhall Road.

A couple in their 70s were injured when a stolen BMW crashed into their car after being chased by police.

Police said the suspects failed to stop when they tried to pull over the BMW in Wolverhampton, before leading them on a chase.

It is thought police abandoned the pursuit shortly before the crash, at the junction of Lower Street and Tettenhall Road.

The air ambulance landed on nearby Lower Green, in Tettenhall, to airlift the elderly woman to New Cross Hospital.

Her husband, who was driving the couple’s Honda Civic, was taken to the hospital by ambulance with head and facial injuries.

Lower Street was closed for more than two hours after the smash which happened at 1.20pm yesterday, causing traffic delays on Tettenhall Road and Henwood Road.

The stolen BMW, thought to have been taken in Walsall on Tuesday, crashed through a fence bordering Lower Green and Lower Street.

Two 18-year-old men were arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft and remained in custody today.

An MGF sports car and a Vauxhall Zafira were also damaged. A man, believed to be in his 20s, suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital.

Another man and a woman escaped injury. A resident in Lower Street said: “One of the cars had crashed and was half hanging down an embankment.”
