Flowers banned at Russells Hall Hospital
Friday 22nd October 2010, 8:00PM BST.
Plans to ban visitors from taking flowers onto wards at a Black Country hospital have been given the thumbs-up by governors.
Governors at Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, ratified the proposals in a meeting last night.
The ban on blooms will stretch to all wards — except maternity — because of the risk of infection.
Bosses say flower water carries bacteria and needs to be cleaned out regularly and thoroughly to prevent it harbouring bugs
Denise McMahon, nursing director, said: “Two pieces of equipment worth £10,000 have already been lost when vases have been knocked over and water spilt.
“There is computer equipment attached to patients’ beds now and it’s just not acceptable for it to be damaged.”
Bill Etheridge, governor representing North Dudley, said members of the public were “angry” about the ban.
“It’s all very well ratifying it but they need to be told why it is happening.”

You know what else could be banned to cut down on the risk of infection?
Sick people!

Well they have said why, Mr Etheridge, so what’s the problem?
Too many of these “banned” stories without explaining the rationale behind it.
I would rather have a machine keeping me healthy/alive than a bunch of flowers that will die in a few days.

THESE PEOPLE ARE DAFT IN THE HEAD !!!
If they cleaned the hospitals properly then there wouldn’t be so much bad bacteria around. They’ll be banning grapes from Hospitals next – have these people got a life or what !!!

and i dont suppose theres any bacteria bought in by visitors then

Flowers rarely last more than a couple of days in the heat of a ward. Why should our nurses, who are already stretched be changing water and cleaning out vases. Well done Russell Hall.

yep lets get rid of flowers and keep super bugs, get rid of ward sisters ..oh to late, get rid of patents who cost about £333 a day to keep and send em home, if they are old stick em in a residential home ran by the hospital for the cost of £450 a week, saving loads compared to keeping em in hospital, i know lets get rid of people who know how to run a hospital in the best interest in the patients and staff and give the job to accountants so we can save money not lives, because you cant put a price on life …can you ???
