A father-to-be was murdered in a Wolverhampton street just hours before his wife gave birth to a baby girl, it was revealed today.

The pizza delivery driver was attacked in Chapel Ash as his unsuspecting wife went into labour at the city’s New Cross Hospital.

Police broke news of the tragedy to the woman after she gave birth.

Today two men were in custody on suspicion of murder after a post mortem revealed the victim, who is in his 40s, died of head and chest injuries as a result of being attacked just before midnight on Tuesday.

The dead man lived in Merridale Street West, in Merridale, and worked at Flames takeaway in Chapel Ash.

Detectives believe the death may be linked to an earlier fight in Flames. It is not known whether the victim was returning from work when he was attacked in Clifton Street, where he was found dead by police.

The street remained sealed off today by police tape. Det Ch Insp Mark Payne said: “I would be very interested to hear from anybody who witnessed a fight in Flames between 10.30am and midnight on Tuesday.

“Chapel Ash has many eating and drinking establishments and there would still have been plenty of people around.”

Extra police patrols have been launched in the area.

A dedicated phone line for witnesses to pass information to has now been set up.

It can be reached on 01922 439107.

No discipline or deterrent. Lawlessness is taking over and not enough police or prisons to deal.
The human rights law should be abandoned as it only serves the low-life. Victims aren’t covered by it.

I agree 100%. The criminals are taking over and our politically correct, cowardly politicians refuse to help in case they upset some touchy feely lefty. It make one weep.

This part of town has declined quickly Merridale Road, Compton Road and Tettenhall Road) with scum and ‘the living dead’ wandering around robbing people for their fix. Cars pulling up openly dealing drugs. This sadly was going to happen sooner or later. My sympathy to the family.

The poor family. What is the world comming to? Wolverhampton is in dire straits. The clowns in charge won’t be happy untill all the nice areas have gone downhill. Then everywhere will be dangerous and scratty, but they will have met their “equality targets”

Deepest sympathy to the family and friends involved in this

I live along the Compton Road and agree with previous comments, this can be a dangerous area and many people like myself walk through Chapel Ash into and out of the town centre at night. A stronger police presence and clean up in this area is surely needed. The only patrol I ever see around this area are the Traffic Wardens during rush hour.

The abandonment and decay of the old Eye Infirmary and Charles Clark buildings only helps in harbouring strays and drug addicts alike.

Now there’s to be more police cut-backs over the next four years. Couldn’t make it up could you.
