Travellers set up camp on Springfield Brewery site
Wednesday 22nd September 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Travellers have set up camp on an historic Black Country brewery site.
A convoy of caravans, trucks and cars have moved on to Wolverhampton’s landmark Springfield Brewery site, which had bollards in place after being taken over by another group just months ago.
It is not known if the group is the same one that was evicted from land in nearby Raby Street, All Saints, yesterday after Wolverhampton City Council got a court order to remove them.
The privately-owned Springfield Brewery site was taken over by travellers in June when 14 caravans moved on to the site.
After travellers started moving on to the site at around 1pm yesterday, one resident living nearby, said: “There are only a few there at the moment but that is how it started last time. We had a lot of problems last time. It was not very pleasant at all.”
The site, off Cannock Road in Springfield, is earmarked for transformation with more than 300 homes but the development has stalled due to the economic downturn.
Housing developer George Wimpey put its seven-acre share of the site up for sale in September last year.

here we go again,it’s about time we got tough on this scum who blight people lives.why don’t the council, the police ,the social services check to see if everything is in order like driving licenses,tv licenses, road tax,car insurance, kids are in school and in good health etc, etc.if they can afford to drive a car and tow a carvan then they can afford to rent a house.

Hey Wolves Council…couldn’t someone have taken down the registration numbers or VIN numbers of the vehicles involved during your visits to the All Saints site, and then compared them when you get called out to the Springfield site? Or is that too easy? That does of course, assume, that the registration plates and VIN numbers are correct and that the DVLA records are in order for the vehicles (not to mention tax, MOT and insurance). If the numbers tally then you will know if these are the same bunch of people. Oh, and in the unlikely event that the registration, VIN, tax, MOT and insurance were not correct for the vehicles, you could call always call the police, since they shouldn’t have used the public roads to get to where they are now.
It is all so easy for them to do what they like, and the so-called Authorities don’t seem to have any appetite to make it any less so. Therein lies a big part of the problem.

Where in the story does it say Wolverhampton Council don’t know the registration numbers?!

Fair point. Perhaps they do but they choose not to do anything with the information. I was suggesting they could use that kind of information to identify if the group on Springfield was the same as the group that was evicted from All Saints.

1 – Jason – within minutes of each other, and by sheer coincidence, we have both made the same suggestions for tackling the situation. If only the powers-that-be were that perceptive.

Yes it always confuses me, I thought it was illegal to drive on the road without tax and insurance, I have seen adverts that cars get crushed if they are without tax, so why do the police not just go and seize these vehicles and crush them, no transport no moving caravans, seems very simple to me!!

What is it exactly that so bothers you about these people? Why should they be made to live in houses when their (very ancient) culture is predicated on mobility?
They’re citizens just like you – why should they be hounded and described as ‘scum’ because they don’t want to live like you? Even when they buy their own land, they’re forced off. That land in Springfield Brewery is abandoned – let them stay.
Yes, they should have tax, insurance and so on – but you just assume that they don’t. I know there are instances of antisocial behaviour, but your comments seem to imply that travellers offend you by merely existing. Every heard of ‘live and let live’?

The reason people object to these “travellers” is because of the points made in the aforementioned posts.
If they made an effort to clean up after themselves, pay their taxes like everyone else and generally stopped antagonising the authorities, then maybe others might be more tolerant.
It’s a two-way street and not as one-sided as you suggest.

I will assume from your post that you’ve never had any direct contact with the traveller community, or that they’ve never set up on land anywhere near you.
Your post shows incredible ignorance. The scum, for that’s what they are, cost the taxpayer millions of pounds each year to police anti-social behaviour and clean up after them. Money that should be better spent on education, healthcare and infrastructure for those of us that do pay tax. I don’t just assume that they don’t pay taxes, it’s a well know fact. Just where exactly do you think their tax demands are sent?
Unfortunately people like you just compound the situation with your liberal left appraisal of the situation. I guarantee that if travellers were to set up a camp near you, your attitude would change overnight.

Ancient culture my eye!! they are not true romanies, they are scrounging, theiving vile scum!
your post is obviously written out of ignorance, they are not living in beautiful horse drawn caravans just roaming round pulling onto country fields, they are causing damage to get onto new sites, they are leaving trash everywhere, they are abusive and have no thought for anyone that may live (yes in houses)where they decide they are going to put up camp for a while which then has to be cleared at our cost (yes us the tax payers) it would be great to live and let live if all of us had to pay our taxes and work for a living oh and live decently, but alas it is not the case with these people and never will be!!
