Edgbaston bank worker facing prison after aiding account thefts
Saturday 4th September 2010, 12:50PM BST.
A Birmingham Midshires worker has been warned that prison is inevitable after he was found guilty of helping conmen steal £100,000 from customers’ savings accounts.
Ivan Obita logged into accounts and passed on personal details such as passwords and dates of birth to thieves who then phoned and posed as the genuine customers wanting to transfer funds.
Obita bowed his head as the jury returned its unanimous verdicts at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday. Recorder David Herbert bailed Obita while reports are drawn up ahead of sentencing on September 30, and warned him: “A prison sentence, as I see it, is inevitable.”
The trial heard how Obita, who had worked at the bank for a year as a customer service agent, handled hundreds of calls every day. Four customers fell victim to attempts to transfer funds from their account.
Obita was caught because he was the only staff member to have dealt with all of the victims.
Obita, aged 37, of Marroway Street, Edgbaston, was convicted of five counts of unauthorised access to a computer system for dishonest reasons.
