Wolverhampton’s ailing markets are to stay put
Thursday 2nd September 2010, 6:00PM BST.
Wolverhampton’s ailing markets are to stay put despite discussions about moving them having taken place for nearly a year, it emerged today.
A survey of some 1,000 shoppers and traders has proved inconclusive, with almost equal numbers of people wanting the markets to stay put, moved to Queen Square and Dudley Street, or moved to the piazza outside the Civic Centre.
Wolverhampton City Council’s chief officer for commercial services Alistair Merrick, said the result backed up the ruling Tory-Lib Dem cabinet’s decision to leave the market alone until the future of the £300 million Summer Row shopping centre was clear.
The market has been boosted by incentives.
The number of stalls occupied in the indoor market rose from 68 in February to 92, and stall rents have been held at last year’s rates.
Neil Spiers, who runs a haberdashery stall, said today: “We’ve had a good two months and the free parking has been working well.
“The market in Queen Square is popular because it has had cheap rents but if we all move there the cost would have to be tripled, so we don’t want to do that.”

Why cant the indoor market go in to the unused woolworths shop and outdoor market go into dudley street or is that to easy

At last ! Some sort of decision. Both traders and shoppers now can face a calmer future, at least for the time being. The free parking has helped ensure survival.
The SUMMER ROW shopping parade has little prospect of success. The venture capital is not forthcoming, telling us that investors have little confidence in the project. Time for a re-think
The scheme should now be abandoned. The site should be offered to one of the feuding stores Tesco.or Sainsbury, on condition they get a move on , and the planners could impose some provision for independent traders.

We need the Lord Raglan wasteland developed, to produce a situation like Stafford where you can park at Tesco for 3 hours, walk into town, then back to Tesco to finish your shopping.
Having people walk through the market will give it a new lease of life, and perhaps fill the indoor market and improve the fresh food outdoor section. It’s a great value market, but gradually turning into a large bric-a-brac jumble store.
I think the current location is fine, but the neighbouring 1 hour free parking should be permanent. Be great to see a market thriving and selling great local food like Leicester and Birmingham.

Totally agree with you. A fantastic idea. Let’s hope the council listen!
