New flats plan for Low Level station
Thursday 2nd September 2010, 11:30AM BST.
An eyesore concrete skeleton could finally be turned into more than 100 flats two years after building work stalled.
Nothing has been done on the housing scheme at the former Low Level station in Wolverhampton since 2008.
Council planning chiefs have recommended the development for approval, despite concerns changes to the designs may make it look less attractive. Balconies will no longer be built and flats will instead get French windows. The project was to build 191 flats in two blocks on land off Wednesfield Road.
One of the blocks is already part-built but is just an empty concrete frame.
Developers have now e-submitted their designs and will add a further five flats, meaning it will be five storeys instead of four.
The development would consist of 14 one-bedroom apartments and 95-two bedroom apartments.
Bosses are seeking to cut costs by making changes including Juliette-style French windows with safety barriers instead of the full courtyard and trackside balconies they had originally planned.
Wolverhampton City Council planning officer Mark Elliot has recommended the scheme for approval when the planning committee meets on Tuesday.
But he said: “The loss of a walk out balcony to the prominent internal courtyard elevations that face onto Broad Gauge Way would significantly detract from the buildings’ design and finish.”
The new flats would be built close to the Fusion residential development, Premier Travel Inn and The Bluebrick bar.
Andy Cohu, technical director for Barratt West Midlands, said: “We have submitted two revised planning applications for the final phase of our Fusion development on Sun Street.
“They represent some alterations to the proposed materials and an additional five apartments. These changes will increase the cost of the project and assist in improving the projected revenue and therefore its viability.”
A buyer is still being sought for the main Grade II listed Low Level station building.
