Drivers pay £6m to park
Tuesday 31st August 2010, 5:00PM BST.
Motorists have forked out more than £6million on charges at Dudley Council pay and display car parks in the last three years, figures reveal.
The councillor responsible for transport said the money kept car parks clean and safe.
It comes after the Express & Star reported free on-street parking could be scrapped to ease congestion in town centres.
Meanwhile, pay and display charges could be cut.
In 2009-10 drivers spent £2m in fees at the borough’s 30 pay and display car parks. The previous financial year the figure was £2.14m while in 2007-08, it was £2.19m.
The cabinet member for transportation, Councillor Angus Adams, said: “People have to take into consideration the cost of maintaining the car parks to a good standard, although some multi-storey car parks are badly in need of maintenance.”
Councillor Adams acknowledged that the multi-storey car park in Bell Street, Stourbridge, was full of litter first thing in the morning while groups of youths regularly used it to skate board.
He added: “The council does not drop litter, it is people who have a total disregard for their environment.”
He said the council and police patrolled Bell Street regularly.
“We are doing what we can to alleviate the problem.”
A proposal to make motorists pay for on-street parking in Dudley, Stourbridge, Brierley Hill and Halesowen town centres has been put forward by deputy leader Councillor Les Jones.
He said charging people for on-street parking in the main town centres was fair as they were “premium spots”.
He added cutting car park charges would help traders compete with Merry Hill where parking was free.
Council officers will meet to discuss the proposal.
The Association of British Drivers has criticised authorities which put up charges. At least 150 councils have brought in new charges this year.

Lets hope that the car god lasts forever and ever, amen. At least we can actually see the good work the car does. Better than a 2000 year old fairy story. Lets see if the E&S have the guts to allow this one.

Well suck it Mark! … there’s a good chap! ………

Would you like you enlighten me on the good work the car does?

Strikes me that these kids in Stourbridge could possibly do with some kind of skate park to keep them occupied. There’s got to be some space or unused portion of a car park that they could use. Hmm!
No excuse for littering though , if you want to be treated with respect and all that…..
As someone not from the area I nearly got locked in one Stroubridge car park recently because I only just noticed that pathetic little dign telling me the place would be locked at 7:30. Place was deserted.

The answer is easy. Take your custom to a town where the parking fees are less restrictive. Do that and Dudley will sink even further into the mire and maybe even those responsible for the exorbitant cost of parking would get the message. Money talks people, use it to your advantage.

Mark Smith, why punish the town for the stupidity of the council?
If the councillors want to cut costs, they could cut their allowances, scrap the mayoral car, get rid of their hospitality budget, and all the silly ego boosting events they subject us to. I wonder if that silly “Festival of Water and Light” is still going ahead?
Dudley has already suffered a devastating blow with the closure of Beatties, and the opening of Iceland will do nothing to improve matters?
Do they really think people will pay to park in the street? I certainly won’t. I will still support Dudley, but I will stop at nothing to beat the parking charges, if that means parking in residential streets or whatever, and I urge everyone to do the same.
The council has no right to charge the public to park on land that the public already owns.
