Demolition begins on city landmark

To anyone passing by it may look like a depressing symbol of 21st century Britain – an empty office in a bad state.

But the demolition of Peal House in Wolverhampton is making way for a new 60-space car park for Wolves fans.

Bit by bit this eight-storey building is being taken to pieces from the top down.

The former Carillion building was bought earlier this year by Wolves owner Steve Morgan’s Bridgmere Group.

Just 100 yards from Molineux it is hoped the scheme will help cut match day congestion in the city centre.

Carillion’s 350 staff moved out in May 2008 and relocated to the former Staffordshire Building Society officers on Ring Road St Mark’s. The car park at Peal House may well be only a temporary move. There are plans for Mr Morgan to spend up to £40 million revamping Molineux and turning it into a 50,000-seater venue.

The site of Peal House could eventually make way for a hotel or leisure development but designs are still a long way off.

Peal House will take around another nine weeks to remove from the skyline of Wolverhampton.
