Hospital workers clogging up streets with cars
Saturday 28th August 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Hospital workers are leaving cars in clogged-up streets despite having paid for staff car parks.
Problems are continuing in streets surrounding Walsall Manor Hospital despite bosses spending hundreds of thousands providing new spaces for staff.
A 320-space car park was opened in Pleck Road in December to put an end to years of parking nightmares, which resulted this year in dozens of cars being towed away and fines issued by police.
But although employees pay between £10 and £15 per month on hospital facilities, cars with permits have been reported parking in nearby streets including Forrester Street, Moat Road, Manor Road, Ida Road and Scarborough Road.
Arjun Chand, a community volunteer, from Scarborough Close, said he could not understand why workers would let money spent on parking go to waste.
“I think it’s about time that they introduced residents-only parking on the roads around the hospital, because nothing else seems to make any difference.
“It’s affecting residents really badly,” he added.
Sue James, chief executive at Walsall Manor Hospital, said: “We encourage all of our staff to park on one of our secure staff car parks.
“Unfortunately, there are some members of staff that choose not to use the staff car parking that is provided and instead park their cars in the streets close by to the hospital.”

“Unfortunately, there are some members of staff that choose not to use the staff car parking.” … Because there isn’t enough room.
Unfortunately, some fool chose not to provide adequate car parking facilities.

I have lived on the Alumwell for 30 years and I think as the tiny estate is used as a:
1. A shortcut between the M6 junction 9 and 10.
2. A shortcut to Walsall town centre.
3. A traffic stop for people to pick their kids up from school.
4. As a car park for the Manor Hospital.
5. As a truck stop for the factories.
6. As a car park for the local mosque.
Don’t we think it is time that we introduced parking permits or traffic wardens?
