Poundland are amongst the companies looking to recruit seasonal staff over the next month.

Thousands of jobs will be up for grabs in the West Midlands next month in a bumper Christmas recruitment drive, it was revealed today.

Poundland has announced it is looking for 2,500 workers nationally to help them through the festive season, with many of the jobs at its depots in Willenhall and Bilston.

At least 400 posts need filling in Wolverhampton, where 25 employers including Carillion and Royal Mail will be looking for staff at a jobs fair.

Royal Mail alone needs 300 workers, many at its Sun Street depot in the city, to deal with the festive rush.

In Walsall, around 300 temporary jobs will be on offer at another event which will see employers including BhS, Village Hotel, Matalan and Walsall FC signing up new recruits.

Crowds of more than 1,500 job hunters are expected at both events and businesses say competition is fierce – there could be up to four job hunters for every vacancy.

Elsewhere, Argos will create seasonal jobs at regional stores, including positions at its Acton Gate distribution centre, near Stafford, and TK Maxx says it has been overrun with applications for 250 positions at its distribution centre in Green Lane, Walsall.

The jobs will provide a timely boost for West Midlands employment figures, which fell by 27,000 to 221,000 in August but were still above the national average and saw a four per cent hike in Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants in Wolverhampton.

Kerriann Carter, recruitment co-ordinator at Poundland, said it was advertising hundreds more jobs this year after a huge expansion which saw it open shops across the country, including in Cannock’s former Woolworths.

The company will advertise within the next fortnight, while jobs fairs take place at the New Art Gallery in Walsall from 10am on September 7, and at the City of Wolverhampton College from 10am on September 10.

Temporary jobs..it his the way to run a sustainable economy, or is merely fodder for the New Deal/Liebour/CONservative coalition? The jobs fairs should be a springboard for business leaders, IT Specialists and Legal Advisors..not desperate, demoralised people jumping for joy under the false pretense they “succeeded in finding work” or just to get the New Deal staff off their back, only to wind up foraging for scraps because they cannot afford to work for the wages and the conditions offered. The West Midlands has always been at the bottom of the pecking order and I don’t think this news is so great to be honest, I think it’s just propaganda. I mean no disrespect to Poundland and their staff, either, who I’m sure work damn hard for their pay.

      Well said.

This “job” boon is not good news – it distracts people away from real enterprise and growth, from training for real careers and innovation, and gives people false hope. There’s only so little people can shave off their weekly expenses by downgrading to cheaper products – there will come a point where there’s nothing cheaper than the cheapest, and people will simply have to either cut back on spending or borrow more. The latter can’t happen because of what’s happened to the banks – therefore…

Retail is dead. The only reason we celebrate bad news like this is we know that the people in the Black Country can only work in shops – because they are too stupid to do anything else.

Connor I agree with the first part of your blog to a degree…but on the other hand i think these jobs will be well suited to students who are after some pocket money. my daughter for one is looking for some part time work while she studies, and it will also give her some additional work experience at the same time.

I have no real issue with purchasing products from the poundshop – they sell some named brands cheaper than places like boots and superdrug, but then again wilkinsons have brand named products cheaper than the poundshop, as does Aldi/netto/lidl against the larger supermarkets. There will always be a choice in retail, comsumers have the right to choose…..whether its M&S or Aldi, poundland or Beattie.

I completely disagree that people in the black country are too stupid to do anything else, are you counting yourself in that equation or are you not from the black country. I for one consider myself to be ambitious, well educated with a reasonably paid job. Dont tar everyone with the same brush…its not a fair comment to make.

Agreed! what the country needs is ‘value added’ work that contributes to the wellbeing of the Country, not low paid often part-time jobs selling cheap tat from China or bankrupt stock

Its a sorry state of affairs when the jobs going are for a store with the cheapest products probably all supplied from abroad.
    It sums this country up.
    Cheap!
We sold out for next to nothing.

Surely these are the jobs that teenagers & students should be having? Temp xmas jobs?
Adults/those out of education should be looking for full time jobs that pay above NMW, if they’ve not got the quals, they should get off their ass and get educated.
