Wolves fan’s cherished page from 1889

A notice looking for a 10-year-old girl to adopt, an advert featuring fever cures, and Wolves’ first FA Cup Final appearance in 1889.

These are just some are some of the fascinating items featured in a copy of the Express & Star that has been discovered.

Barry Biddle found a framed page from the newspaper dated Saturday, March 30, 1889 hanging on the wall of his brother-in-law Keith Hughes’ Wolverhampton home when he was clearing out the property following his death.

Mr Biddle, who lives in Henwood Road, in the city, said: “We thought it was funny that they were advertising for a girl, a 10-year-old, and all the old stocks and shares, and all the stuff about the Wolves. He (Keith) loved his football.”

The page is full of insightful information which gives a good impression of what life might have been like in the 19th century.

One notice reads: “Wanted, a girl, about 10 years of age; one to adopt – Apply 3 The Green, Darlaston.”

Other classifieds include a property to rent, in Upper Villiers Street, for ‘£18 per annum’ and a lost bull and terrier pup which answers to the name of ‘Shot.’

A paid advert lets readers know about the latest medicine on offer. It reads: “Headache, biliousness, acidity, and feverishness are at once relieved by Reade Brothers. Citrous Saline. Refreshing and exhilarating. In bottles 13 1/2d and 2s each. Goldstraw Chemist, Bilston.”

Mr Biddle, aged 73, thinks the page was on Mr Hughes’ wall because it covered Wolves’ first appearance in the final of the English Association Challenge Cup.

Wolves lost 3-0 in the game against Preston North End. The article gives an in-depth run down of the game.

The team, who were training at The Yew Tree, in Enville Road, went in to the game full of confidence.

A player was quoted as saying: “If clubs such as the Rovers, the Albion and the Villa can play them up so closely we don’t see why we shouldn’t.

“If it’s a hotter day we think we shall have a better chance, for our men are trained like thoroughbreds, while theirs carry too much flesh.”
