Draconian security measures could put pilgrims off attending the Papal Mass in Birmingham, it was feared today.

Pope Benedict XVI will lead a Mass for 65,000 people in Cofton Park on September 19.

But security measures which will see buses bring people on to the site as early as 2am – eight hours before the Mass is due to start – were today branded excessive.

Pilgrims have also been given an exhaustive list of what they can and cannot take into the park.

Sunblock, banners, flags, torches, cushions and small folding chairs are permitted.

But alcohol, gazebos, canopies, barbecues, animals and candles have all been deemed to “pose a threat” and banned.

The Pope is visiting the UK on September 16-19 for the first Papal visit since that of John Paul II in 1982.

As the trip is a state visit, the Government is in charge of security at all sites.

But Peter Jennings, press secretary for the Archdiocese of Birmingham, says he fears the arrangements will put people off.

Mr Jennings said today: “The security in my view is draconian.

“This rigorous security is to keep protesters out, but has also had the effect of putting pilgrims off, particularly older people.

“I am expressing the anguish and anxiety that has been expressed to me by the older people of Birmingham,” he added.

Cofton Park will offer no seating or cover during the event.

The Cabinet Office today said: “A very good job is being done in Birmingham towards organising the event. The Government is working with local authorities and the police and has to balance security whilst working with the church to secure a good experience for pilgrims.”
