Police hunt public toilets pickpocket
Friday 20th August 2010, 11:30AM BST.
A pickpocket has targeted male shoppers using public toilets in a Black Country town centre, police said today.
Officers are hunting the man who has struck twice at the same toilet block off Flood Street in Dudley.
One of the victims, aged 64, had £20 cash stolen from his wallet . In a separate incident the thief walked past his 67-year-old victim and snatched his mobile phone from his shirt pocket.
Officers are investigating the thefts which happened earlier this week and say they are being linked due to the similarity of the offences and description of the thief.
Pc Alex Griparis from the St Thomas’ neighbourhood team said: “No force was used during these incidents but obviously the men have been distressed by what’s happened.
“We are keen to stop this thief in his tracks and urge anyone with information or who recognises the description to come forward.”
Ward councillor John Davies, who sits on the select committee for community safety, said he was concerned to hear about the thefts.
He is suggesting police put up a camera outside the entrance to the toilet block to catch the thief who he is says is likely to strike again.
“When someone goes to the toilet they are usually on their own and may have bags of shopping with them and they are vulnerable.
“I think the police should fix a camera outside the entrance to act as a deterrent and catch this person as it is likely will do it again.”
The thief is described as a white, aged in his mid to late 20s, around 6ft tall, of slim build, with short brown hair and clean shaven.
Clothing worn includes a light coloured t-shirt and brown trousers and a dark blue jacket and dark blue trousers.
