Highgate brewery owner in revival vow
Thursday 29th July 2010, 9:59PM BST.
The owner of Walsall’s Highgate brewery have vowed to revive it, revealing it had turned down requests to demolish it from a dismantling company.
Smethwick pub group Empire Star, which owns the Grade II-listed brewery in Sandymount Road, confirmed it had been approached by a US brewery among others interested in taking it over.
Ian Robinson, speaking on behalf of Empire Star, said: “The Sandymount site is a major historical part of Walsall and Empire Star’s main wish is to see brewing continue on the site.”
It has been revealed that several brewers have also inquired about buying the site, which has been shut since Highgate and Davenports collapsed with the loss of 22 jobs on June 14.
Californian firm, Stone Brewing Company, has registered an interest in buying the empty site as part of its expansion into Europe.
A meeting to discuss plans for the brewery will take place on September 14 at 7.30pm at St Matthew’s Centre, St Matthew’s Close, Walsall.
