Youth’s face cut by man holding glass

A youth football team manager from Wolverhampton glassed a teenager at a party, a court heard.

Tom Webb snapped during the birthday party of his wife Julie when the victim made an offensive comment, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The 42-year-old, of Jonesfield Crescent in Eastfield, punched the youth while holding a glass in his hand.

Prosecutor Miss Helena Miller told how the single blow cut the teenager in the face. Violence flared after Webb stepped outside while still holding the glass on October 24.

A jury found Webb not guilty of wounding with intent at an earlier hearing following a trial and he admitted an alternative charge of wounding.

Imposing a suspended prison sentence and community order, Recorder Anthony Warner said yesterday: “Some abuse was issued to him by the young man and he flipped, punching him in the face.

“He had no appreciation of still having the glass in his hand, probably because of the drink he had consumed.

“He has expressed regret for behaviour that was wholly out of character.

“He had given a number of years of his life to the football club, running the lottery, training youngsters to keep them off the streets and providing other functions that displayed a genuine community spirit.

“Sadly all of that is now behind him and he will never be able to work in that capacity again.

“Many people will lose the benefit of that.”

The court heard how the father of three was now in serious financial trouble.

Recorder Warner  told him: “Because of that I do not consider it sensible to order you to pay compensation.”

Webb was given a 12-month jail sentence, suspended under supervision for two years, and ordered to do 180 hours of unpaid work.
