Oldbury father was murdered in a ‘cowardly’ attack, say police
Saturday 24th July 2010, 11:49AM BST.
A father-of-six who got out of bed to answer a knock at his front door was murdered in his garden in a “cowardly yet extremely brutal” attack, police said today.
Charles Kelly was repeatedly stabbed seconds after he opened the door to his home in Marshall Road in Oldbury.
The 57-year-old carpenter had been asleep in bed with his wife Marlene when the killer knocked on his door at 10pm last Friday.
West Midlands Police today revealed new details of the crime in a bid to get more information a week on from his death.
Acting Detective Superintendent Tim Bacon said Mr Kelly’s murder had been a targeted attack. Last night, police officers were in Marshall Road talking to motorists, pedestrians and residents. Flowers still surround the family home, along with porcelain angel figurines and prayer cards in memory of Mr Kelly.
Det Supt Bacon said: “Charles Kelly went out early in the evening on Friday July 16. When he got home later, he went to bed and that’s when there was a knock at the door. He got up, came down to see who was at the door and he was then brutally attacked.
“It was a cowardly attack. He was stabbed a number of times and he died from his injuries.”
Two men aged 40 and 50 were arrested in connection with the murder and have been bailed pending further inquiries. Anyone with information can call 0345 113 5000.
