A Canadian fighter pilot ejected from his cockpit seconds before his plane crashes and explodes in a ball of flames.

Witnesses looked on in horror as the Canadian Air Force plane crashed to the ground at the Lethbridge Regional Airport in Canada, before bursting into a ball of flames.

Pilot Capt Brian Bews had been practising low-flying manoeuvres for an air show when the crash happened yesterday.

The CF-18 Hornet was to take part in this weekend’s two-day show in Lethbridge starting today. Capt Nicole Meszaros, a spokeswoman for 4 Wing, said: “The pilot, we are very thankful to say, is OK.”

An investigation into the cause has been launched.
