Sainsbury’s store hit by swarm of flies
Thursday 22nd July 2010, 11:30AM BST.
A supermarket in the Black Country is being investigated by environmental health officers after becoming infested with flies.
A customer at the Blackheath Sainsbury’s store says she saw flies buzzing around the bakery department and cafe on Tuesday night.
Margaret Collins, aged 54 of Warmington Road, Quinton, who is estate manager at Selly Oak special school in Birmingham, was in the supermarket in Halesowen Street, Rowley Regis, with her husband Alan.
She said: “We did our shopping and when I picked up some doughnuts in the bakery I saw flies all around.
“We were dying for a coffee after the shopping, but when we went to the cafe we couldn’t believe our eyes.
“There were flies everywhere. We ordered our coffee and food, but we couldn’t eat it, we kept having to bat them away.”
She said she had complained to Sandwell Council’s environmental health department.
A council spokesman said they had been made aware of the complaint and would be visiting the store.
Sainsbury spokesman Tom Parker said the company was aware of the problem and it had been dealt with.
He added: “We called in outside experts and the flies have been removed.”
