Talented children and proud parents attended an awards ceremony to honour the winners of the Express & Star's annual Design an Ad competition.

Dozens of primary school children from the Black Country descended on the Mount Hotel, in Tettenhall Wood, Wolverhampton, last night.

They had designed adverts for local businesses to try to bag prizes for their schools.

The overall winner was 10-year-old Matilda Grayson who created an advert for Berriman Eaton estate agents.

She took home a framed copy of her advert, a goodie bag and a £500 cheque for her school, Newbridge Preparatory.

Her advert, with a giant sun and a range of homes from a castle to a caravan, was voted top by Express & Star readers.

Chloe Reade, aged 10, of Whitson Avenue, Wednesfield, a pupil at Oak Meadow Primary, designed a winning advert for Network West Midlands which encouraged people to use their cars less.

And Daniel Potts, of Edward the Elder Primary, Wednesfield, drew a winning advertisement for Money Smart Team.

The competition's main sponsor was the Mander Centre. Spokeswoman Katie Fellowes said: "The drawings were all absolutely fantastic and it was unbelievably hard to pick the winners."
