Morning queues for iPhone 4 launch

Queues for the new iPhone outside O2 in Wolverhampton City Centre

Gadget-lovers joined huge queues this morning as they aimed to be among the first to get their hands on the new Apple iPhone 4.

Apple’s latest smartphone is slimmer and more powerful than its predecessor and features the new OS 4 operating system as standard, which makes multi-tasking third party apps possible for the first time.

The iPhone 4 offers video calling, a higher-resolution display and the ability to record and view high-definition video.

It also features an oil-resistant glass screen to stop grubby fingers smearing the display.

In Wolverhampton this morning, a line of people queued from the O2 shop to the entrance of the of the Wulfrun shopping centre, with the first bleary-eyed people arriving at 4.30am.

Robert Smith, 74, from Wolverhampton, had been queuing outside the store since 7am and had even brought a chair along to take the weight off his feet.

“We’re all mad” he said.

“I’m a dedicated Apple man, I have Apple everything and the iPhone is worth having. I had the original and the iPhone 4 will have all the features I need.”

Azeem Ahmad, 23, was also among the swarm of people waiting to buy the gadget. “I came here last year to get the last one and walked straight in” he says.

“This year I thought that if I came here five minutes before the shop opened, I’d get straight in, but I’ve been here for an hour.”

Craig Bowler, 28, from Dudley, was among the first people to leave with the iPhone 4 and was delighted with his purchase, even though he’d been in waiting since 5.45am.

“It’s a great phone, I’m looking forward to activating and having a play with it.

Costs

The iPhone 4 was first unveiled earlier this month and it is being offered direct from Apple without a new monthly contract at £599 for the top-of-the-range 32GB model and £499 for the 16GB version.

Although costs vary, it is also likely to incur a significant outlay if you buy it on contract from a network operator.

Influential mobile phone expert Ernest Doku, from review site Omio.com, reckons the handset will live up to the hype.

He said: “The design team at Apple has truly surpassed itself with the iPhone 4 – a super slim version of the 3GS with a whole lot more oomph under the bonnet.”

    600 quid?? dole??? sadddooss??

maybe just hard working people booking time off from work to get something they work damn hard for???

just because people want the latest gadget/handset does not mean they are sad and on the dole….

and by the way the phone did not cost £600… Maybe it is time some of you got a grip and stopped assuming….. Next time you get you express and star in the post maybe think about saving your HARD CASH on something better…..

Yes I think it’s sad when people have nothing better to do with their lives but to queue from that time in the morning just for a phone.A phone thats available in mass supplies. I dont say they are on the dole and yes some may have saved hard for it, although if the truths known the credit card industry had a nice day .

Why shouldn’t a 74 year old want the latest gadget ?

You are all making presumptions here, they are on the dole, they are paying on the never never and shock horror they are on contract ?

I know it sounds unthinkable but there are some people in Wolverhampton that go to work and can save up for things.

I’m looking at getting one as soon as my current contract expires. I’ll pay the same monthly tariff as i have now and will have to pay £120 for the phone but O2 will give me £180 for my old 3G model. It’s a no brainer really.

    Jealousy is a cruel affliction.

Don’t hate the player hate the game, I can’t comment 4 everyone but no I’m not on benefits, it’s not being payed for by credit card or the knock, my life is not meaningless, I have worked very hard and have been very succesfull so that I can afford to not have to go to work everyday, therefor I can afford to pay cash outright and I have all the time in the world to que. I’m sorry if this is not your cup of tea but each to their own! If a 74 year old bloke wants to spend his money on a phone then that’s his choice, jealousy will get you nowhere!!!!!!!!!!

A staff member said O2 only received 1000 iPhones, and that was for the whole country, so yeah it did seem smart for people to queue up as people who got there for 9am were turned away! Apparently there was only 50 at the O2 in Wolverhampton!
