More roadworks misery for motorists
Tuesday 22nd June 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Another main route in the West Midlands is to be crippled by more than a month of major roadworks this summer, it was announced today.
Wolverhampton’s busy Penn Road will become one-way for six weeks.
The area affected will be between Goldthorn Road and Muchall Road
The news is the latest misery for drivers, who are enduring disruption on main roads across the region.
One of the biggest roadworks projects is the £12.3 million scheme to turn the Burnt Tree Island on the Sandwell-Dudley border into a junction with traffic lights.
Work is due to continue until May of next year.
Drivers are also set for eight months of delays when work to paint double red lines – alongside a separate project to replace a faulty water pipe – begins on the A454 Wolverhampton Road in Walsall next month.
The scheme on Penn Road will run from July 26 until September 8.
It is part of an 18-month project to replace 16 miles of water mains underneath Penn.
Drivers heading out of the city centre towards Penn, South Staffordshire, Stourbridge and Kidderminster will be diverted.
Spokeswoman Gill Dickinson said: “Drivers travelling into the city will be unaffected, but traffic leaving the city will need to take an alternative route.”

I bet people will moan about the lack of water pressure and hosepipe bans if they didn’t. No winning with the people in this country.
